Cheers to 2013

Another wonderful, happy year for KruBooks.  I truly have the world’s greatest job.  I work with the very best clients and had the opportunity to design some incredible albums this year.  Weddings just keep getting better and better.  I love all the creativity and beauty people pour into their one perfectly planned day.  But most of all, I love opening that image folder and seeing two individuals so madly, insanely in love that they can’t wait to express to the world that this is their soul mate, their other half, their forever partner.

For all you math junkies out there, here are the numbers:

123 albums / (17 photographer clients + 2 brides) + (1 new website – 10 gazillion hours spent figuring out wordpress) + 1 bundle of joy = the best year yet!

Cheers to 2013 and welcome 2014!  Once again, a huge thank you to all my clients who make my work such a joy.  Love you all!

New Website

In case it’s been a while since you visited KruBooks.com, we are proudly supporting a new interface!  I decided to move away from my old flash site since I’d had some issues with loading and missing images.  Switching to a new provider and learning design and coding in WordPress gave me a few extremely irritable days (just ask my sweet husband), but I’m super happy with the end result.  And as a bonus, starting from scratch gave me an opportunity to make some other content and process renovations.  I hope you’ll enjoy poking around and checking out the changes.  Here are a few new and improved features:

Online Order Form – This is something I’m actually really excited about.  When photographers use this form for new projects, there’s less need for me to send follow-up emails with questions…everything I need to get started is right there!

– Updated Process and FAQ sections – Our process has been simplified to five quick and easy steps (hallelujah!).  And the FAQ section has new information on selecting and sending images, revisions, and payment.

– Incorporated Blog – Finally the blog and and website are joined under one roof!  I know I’m not the most “aggressive” blogger, but I hope to keep  you more up-to-date with recent projects, interviews from clients, and helpful tips as you embark on your album journey!

The New "Skinny" Flush Mount

When I first started KruBooks, I did a lot of research on printing companies and who I wanted to use as my main suppliers.  Probably 90% of my business is design only, but I like to offer brides and photographers a “whole package” option as well that covers design, print, and bind.  My plan was to keep it simple with two offerings  – a premium flush mount album and a more budget-friendly coffeetable style option.  I picked industry leaders for both and have been very happy with the finished products I’ve seen through the years.  But, as I mentioned in this post from 2009, I’ve continued to keep an eye on other companies and new suppliers as they come up.  There’s plenty of new developments in the album industry!

For my premium flush mount albums, I have been using Leather Craftsmen’s 3500 Flush Series.  I absolutely love their craftsmanship and customer service.  I will continue to offer these albums in 2013, and will blog soon about some new “frills” they have to really make your album stand out from the crowd.  I am also happy to announce that there will be no price raise on these albums this year!

BUT the real news is that I will no longer be offering a coffeetable style option in 2013.  Shocking, I know.  The thing is, while I loved having a less expensive offering for my brides, the simpleness of the album never seemed quite up to par for one of your most treasured heirlooms.  I started recommending it for guest books, engagement, vacation, or portrait albums, but steered brides away from using it for their weddings.  In 2012, I learned about Finao’s new playBOOK album.  The playBOOK is a flush mount with a “skinny” page design…still thicker than a normal art book, but not quite as thick as the premium Leather Craftsmen.

I’m excited to say that I will be replacing my coffeetable album options with these “Skinny” Flush Mount Albums in 2013.  Here’s why I love them:

1) No more press printed pages!  Coffeetable albums have the designs printed right on the page, usually at much lower quality.  Finao’s playBOOK albums are real photographic prints, mounted to thick pages.

2) See ya, gutter!   Traditional coffeetable binding causes you to loose a good portion of your design in that annoying center gutter.  I hated the discontinuity this brought to the design, and how it limited the panoramic feel of those big gorgeous images.  In contrast, the playBOOK has a seamless construction and layflat design.

3) More bang for your buck!  The playBOOK has the quality of a flush mount, but is cheaper than the coffeetable!  As I looked over the pricing, I couldn’t believe that I could offer this upgrade AND have it be less expensive than my current coffeetable album offerings.  The playBOOK has many fun cover options to choose from as well, all PVC free, eco-friendly, non-leather materials.

If you want more information on the pricing for these new “Skinny” Flush Mount Albums, shoot me an email (krubooks@hotmail.com), and I will send the revised 2013 pricing pdf.

Welcome 2013!

I have completely lost all blogging credibility.  It’s been seven months since my last post!  The truth is, I thought about closing the blog down since I was worried sharing too many design ideas might invite imitators.  But I have some fun things in store for 2013 and I don’t want you to miss them!  One of the things I am most excited about is mixing up my album offerings.  But more to come on that soon!

First, I just wanted to say what an awesome year 2012 has been for KruBooks.  Thank you to all the brides, photographers, and etsy clients who helped make it such a success.  One reason I truly love my job is that I work with the BEST people.  I love my repeat photographers who are sweet, understanding, encouraging, funny, and just truly the most quality people.  I can’t wait to continue our friendship in 2013!

2012 was an exciting year for us personally as well.  My husband and I finished the last six months of our Grand Cayman adventure, and moved to Cincinnati in July.  We are happy to be back in good old America, although we definitely miss our island life and friends.  If you want to read more about our Caribbean escape, your can catch up on our Grand Life blog.

Finally, a couple fun stats:  In 2012, I had 117 album orders!  This is compared with 84 album orders in 2011, and 38 album orders in 2010 (when I was doing KruBooks part time).  I also had 108 etsy orders – wahoo!  I love staying busy, and now that I no longer have that amazing weather and clear blue sea tempting me, I hope for even more in 2013.

Best wishes to all my friends for the new year!  Can’t wait to see what’s in store!

New Look

You may notice that the blog got a bit of a spring make-over. Well, the website is sporting a fresh look too! I decided this week that it was time to update my KruBooks site with more recent work, and then I realized that the new work deserved new surroundings, and soon the site and blog were completed revamped! I’m excited for this change as it more accurately reflects the design style I desire for my albums – clean, simple, and sophisticated. It’s amazing how one’s work evolves through the years. I love looking back on albums I did four years ago when first starting KruBooks. They are like old friends, and it’s a nice bit of nostalgia. But there’s no reason for my website and blog to dwell in the past. Welcome to 2011, friends!

KruBooks News

I can’t believe I haven’t announced this on my KruBooks blog yet, but we have some relocation news! My husband was offered a 20 month assignment in Grand Cayman, and we decided to seize the moment and go for it! When are we moving? MONDAY! We’ve known about the move for about six months, and I’ve already contacted my current clients to let them know, but silly me – I forgot to post it on my blog!

Anyway, I love the nature of KruBooks because it really can go anywhere. Since the business is so much file transfer (photographers send me images, I send back finished layouts), it’s easy to do from wherever. If someone orders a design, print, and bind album, I will still be able to order from my printing suppliers and have the book shipped to the client. Hopefully you won’t even notice much of a change! I am so excited for this new adventure, but want to assure you that I will still be very much on top of things here at KruBooks. You can’t get rid of me that easily :)

Reduced Albums Prices!

I’ve just reduced pricing for all bound wedding albums! Prices are lowered on Flush Mount and Coffee Table Albums. Just in time for the holidays! Stop by my site to check out the new pricing (pricing tab is on the right side of the bottom).

I’m also offering some new size options for the Flush Mount albums. Horizontal albums are quickly growing in popularity and becoming a trendy alternative to the standard square sizes. I now have pricing for 9×12 and 11×14 albums on my site. If you are interested in another size, let me know and I’ll send you custom pricing. Other common horizontal sizes are 7×10, 8×10 or 10×14.

Happy album ordering!

It’s Time!

For the last year, I’ve been talking about starting a KruBooks blog. It was even my 2009 New Year’s resolution! I don’t know why I’ve been dragging my feet…but finally I couldn’t resist any longer. I can’t be the only one with a passion for album design (right?), so why not share with the world?

I started KruBooks in October 2007 and have been amazed to watch it grow and and evolve. The journey has not always been easy, but I consider myself incredibly blessed to be doing a job I only dreamed could exist!

Hopefully this blog will be inspirational to you in some way. If you are an upcoming or recent bride, you can gain some helpful tips to planning and purchasing your dream wedding album. If you are a potential client, you can see some recent KruBooks work and get to know me a little better. If you are a photographer, you can learn more about album options and see some amazing work from your peers. And if you are a friend, I’m sure I will have some personal updates to share as well!

So, here we go!
